This beautiful plaster statuette of a female torso was created by the world-famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh. The Dutch Post-Impressionist painter created this artwork in 1885 when he was living in Nuenen and actively experimenting with different art forms. The plaster, which is now known as ‘The Torso’, was initially intended to be a study piece for Van Gogh’s plans to create sculptures for the Nuenen church organ.
The Torso, which sits at 30 cm tall, features a frontal view of a woman’s body from her neckline down to her hips. It is believed that the woman may have been modelled after one of Van Gogh’s friends or relatives. However, its true identity remains unknown to this day.
