Van Gogh originally painted Two Cut Sunflowers in August 1887 while he was living in Paris. At the time, he was heavily influenced by impressionism and its focus on capturing fleeting moments in nature. This may have been what inspired him to create the painting: two sunflowers, freshly cut from their stems and placed side by side against an empty background. The vibrant yellows, oranges, browns and greens capture the beauty of these flowers in their brief moment before wilting away.

The painting also reflects Van Gogh’s fascination with Japanese culture during this period. He was particularly interested in Japanese woodblock prints which often featured bold colors and strong lines – something that is evident in Two Cut Sunflowers. Additionally, Van Gogh was known to take inspiration from everyday life; it is believed that he was inspired by seeing sunflowers growing near his home at the time which perhaps helped him capture their beauty so accurately on canvas.

Two Cut Sunflowers also shows Van Gogh’s developing style during this period; although it has some elements of impressionism such as its focus on capturing a moment in time, there are other more abstract elements such as its symmetrical composition and use of bright colors which suggest a move towards post-impressionism – something that would become more apparent later on in his career as an artist.

Van Gogh’s Two Cut Sunflowers remains one of his most iconic paintings today; not only does it provide us with insight into his evolving artistic style but it also serves as a reminder of the power art has to evoke emotion through its beautiful imagery. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply appreciate beautiful things, there is no denying the powerful impact this painting has had over generations since it first appeared on canvas more than 130 years ago!
